Description: | The key problem in wind turbine energy conversion is sudden loss of lift after a certain angle of attack, leading to stalling of the flow over the airfoil. After the stalling, there is an adverse pressure gradient on the suction surface due to which there is boundary layer separation, sudden loss of lift force, significant increase in the drag and sound intensification in the wake region of the airfoil are limiting the wind turbine energy conversion, its performance and capacity of operation and also poses vital environmental constrains. The active flow control techniques like, pitch control, twist control, camber control and moveable control surfaces are explored to control the flow separation under higher angle of attacks. But these need additional sophisticated attachments and dynamic control which leads to complicate the system. The passive techniques such as wing blade with flaps and micro tabs are investigated. Recently it is reported that the technique of tubercles accommodation at the leading edge of the airfoil has given impressive results by forming recirculating vortices structure dominantly in the trough region and moderately in the peak region of the tubercles. To enhance the different geometries and flow features are to be studied using the flow visualisation study. The tubercles addresses the enhancement of lifting force and its acoustic effects for higher energy conversion conditions. |
