Solid waste management is associated with the control of the generation, collection, storage, transport, processing, and disposal of solid waste. Municipal solid waste management is a problem due to industrialization, urbanization, and population growth. One of the common means of disposal of solid waste is landfill, which is a serious threat to society that is public and environmental health. The main reason is poor management of solid waste management is an unscientific way of waste treatment, people's attitudes, and lack of knowledge in waste segregation and proper means of waste treatment.

This problem has to be addressed scientifically with the application of suitable organic waste treatment. The best-known process to treat organic waste is composting and vermicomposting which helps to biologically stabilize organic waste and convert them into nutrient-rich manure. The present project aims to establish an in-situ vermicomposting unit in the BMSCE campus to efficiently treat organic waste generated inhouse by accelerating the process with the introduction of microbial consortia for the partial degradation of organic waste which acts as primary decomposers Which accelerates the process of partial decomposition. Later secondary decomposers that earthworms act on and organic waste is converted into nutrient-rich vermicompost.
