Brief note by Padmashree Dr.H.C.Visvesvaraya
I had the privilege of joining BMS Engineering College in the first batch when it was founded in 1946. The infrastructure at the time I joined was just two rooms. But, considering the great vision of the founder late Dharmaratnakara Sri B.M.SREENIVASIAH and his thoughts at that time combined with the inspiring spirit of the first Principal Sri GANESHA IYER he appointed, the disadvantages of lack of infrastructure totally disappeared; the group of very bright students in the first batch added value to our pursuit for excellence.
It is this environment which enabled me to secure the first position almost throughout the studies ultimately securing I Class I Rank for the whole University with Gold Medal then the competitor being the Visvesvaraya (then Govt.) Engineering College. A few years later I could secure scholarship to pursue higher studies at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, secure D. I. C. in 1954 and finally Ph.D. from the University of London in 1956.
The then environment BMS College of engineering provided which equipped me to climb up the professional ladder and reach the top positions such as Vice Chancellor of the University of Roorkee (now IIT), Chairman & DG of NCB, Chairman of the National Board of Accreditation etc.; and even to have received many recognitions and honours including ‘PADMASHREE’ from the Govt. of India as far back as 1991 and also later on Honoris Causa D.Sc. from VTU.
ALL these were possible because of what my Alma Mater BMSCE made of me and I am profoundly grateful to the Founder of the College, the Principal and my teachers there.
